Southbank Bristol Arts Trails 2015

I attended a committee meeting last week to become part of the Southbank Arts Trail 2015.  I'm rather excited as since little Freya came along I haven't taken part in any arts trails and do miss the excitement.  I can't wait!  (This also means that my studio room will need to be finished in time ;) Another deadline Dan!!!)

This volunteer run organisation enables artists and creatives from Southville, Bedminster and Ashton, (plus visitors from further afield) to exhibit and share their work in homes and public spaces over one spectacular weekend in May each year.  Visitors have the chance to meet artists and makers in a relaxed environment and also enjoy diverse and fun workshops.  ‘One of the oldest, biggest and best Art Trails that have sprung up around town’ - Bristol Post 2014.  Now in its 13th year, this popular week-end has attracted an impressive 4000-5000 visitors in recent years, with one house alone recording 600 visitors on its first day.

The arts trails is looking to attract new artists, performers, musicians this year to help grow and attract more visitors.  If you know anyone that would like to get involved please follow the links on the SBA website to find out how to become a member, register you home, business or workshop.

Christmas at The Orangery 2014

Last weekend was my first event in quite some time - Christmas at The Orangery 2014, organised by Rachel Goodchild -

The event was held in my home from 2001 until 2008 when, due to the volume of people attending, it was moved to a beautiful Orangery within the gardens of Goldney House and Gardens, Bristol. With this venue move the name was changed from 'Designer Sale' to 'Christmas at the Orangery.' The idea being an annual event where designers can exhibit their work for one day only. Giving customers something a little bit more unique than regular shops.

I absolutely loved taking part.  I'd forgotten what a rush it is to get ready for the big day and the anticipation the night before.  I actually had quite a wakeful night as little Freya was up all night.  I really wouldn't have made it though the day without the help from my Dad.  So a big thanks to my Dad.

The next step on my journey is to get my Etsy shop filled up with all my new products.  Announcements coming soon when this has been completed.  Enjoy the last few days of festive craziness.  Happy Holidays everyone.

My Next Christmas Event - Christmas At The Orangery

Christmas At The Orangery  2014

I've recently signed up to exhibit in my first market in quiet some time (I wonder why that might be!!).  The event sounds quite exciting .. Christmas At The Orangery.

I'm looking forward to participate and meet some of the other exhibitors, especially this very talented lady .. Fiona Willis.  Her work really is an inspiration.

''My prints start their life as wholly original works in pen, ink and watercolour. They are then scanned to produce a digital image from which the giclée prints are produced. However, the digital image is not manipulated in any way and is entirely representative of the original artwork. I've found this process to be the most effective way to reproduce the fine detail that characterises my work.''

I really like that Fiona works in an initially very traditional way.  Drawing by hand and not manipulating her work.  I think that we loose the essence of the image when we draw directly with a graphics tablet etc.  I also prefer to draw by hand, being honest with the medium you are using.

I think I may need to have a gander at her pitch at the event.

The countdown has begun . . .

Only four days to go until the St Werburghs Arts Trail, I've still got a lot to do.  This mainly involves getting the space ready to hang my work, Dan's still got plastering to do in the living room!  Then we're having a painting extravaganza on Wednesday night to get the living room white washed.  My job tonight is to finish the painting in the hallway and then start deciding which pieces I'd like to exhibit.  I've got some lovely frames to use for some of my research work.  I can't wait to see what the finished pieces will look like.

If I have enough time I'd like to bake some rock buns to entice people into the house!  Fingers crossed I'll get everything ready in time.  I'm quite excited about hanging the bunting on Saturday morning, I think it will feel like we've reached a massive goal post with the house, getting so much completed.

The Arts Trail will also be the launch of my new cards, I picked them up this weekend from The Bristol Business Centre.  I'm really happy with the outcome, you'll have to come and have a look . .

If you are going to pop along to the event then Sunday afternoon would be a fab time to call by, you could follow your visit by joining in the after party celebrations . . .

Preperation for the local St Werburghs Arts Trail

Phew we've been busy.  Since my last blog we had family to stay in August, we then commenced work on the hallway and the living room.  Hopefully I'll finish the painting of the hallway this weekend, Dan's still got quite a bit to do in the living room before we can start painting in there, it may be bare plaster walls for the trail!  Dan ripped the fire place out so needs to make a new surround to fit, which I have a feeling may take a while.  I'm sure it will be worth it though.

I've started to research companies where I can get my images printed onto cards, I found that Bristol Business Centre do a good deal.  I'm quite excited!! It seems very professional, I'm looking forward to getting a few samples next week.

Card Samples.

The inspiration for these images came from wooden printing blocks.  I've created a series of these.  I quite like the depth and the roughness to them.

I really like these images, anything paisley related takes me back to my student days at Glasgow School of Art.

My plan for the next week is to finalise the card images to get printed then start framing some of my work for the show.  I'm going to show some drawings that I haven't exhibited before, I'm quite excited about these as I've got some unusual ideas on how to display them!

I'm Coming Back . . . Whoo Hoo

I found out this week that I've not missed the deadline for the St Werburghs Arts Trail, this means that over the weekend period -

Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September

Our home will be open to all whilst I exhibit my work. If you're free please come along and visit.

I'm quite excited as I haven't shown any work since, oooooo last June!

Myself and my partner Dan have been concentrating on bringing our little home back to life. It was a little run down. Now however, we have almost completed the kitchen and the bathroom and so can start inviting people over.

So, I have roughly two months to get the house in order and decide how to show my work!! Exciting!!

Back Soon

Hello All .....

I haven't been updating my blog recently due to work commitments, unfortunately not textile related work :( . I have been revising for three exams related to my FM role. I sit these in December, I can't wait till I complete them. I am now counting down the days until I can return to my creative interest and plan my next collection.

I thought I would share with you all the following note that someone very dear to me sent to me just this week. . . . It made so much sense to me. Enjoy.

What happens when that OTHER kind of habit becomes part of your day to day:

Folk House Exhibition May 1st - June 5th

My next exhibition will be in the Bristol Folk House , it's running from the 1st of May until the 5th of June and is situated in the cafe.

About the Charity
The Folk House is unique. We are the oldest adult education centre in Bristol. We started life in 1870 in the dockland area offering education to the dockers most of whom could not read or write. By 1922 it was renamed the Bristol Folk House. We have been at the Park Street site since 1964. Since 1996 it has been run as a co-operative and receives no outside funding. Today it is a successful adult education and social centre.

I will be arranging an opening afternoon on the Saturday the 2nd of May, more details will be posted soon . . .

New Art Trail for West Bristol (Clifton, Cliftonwood and Hotwells)

This will be my next event in Bristol; I took part in a smaller, similar event last year, which was hosted in the Hope Centre. www.westbristolarts.org.uk
It was a lovely event, with artists and crafts people showing there work on scaffolding! It was a very unique idea but it actually worked quite well. This year the artists involved are to come up with there own ways of hanging/displaying work . . . . . I think I may use an old rickety ladder we have lying around. I could paint it up and display work on all four sides?. . . .
Press Release:
October 18th - 19th 2008”
On October 18th 2008 the first ever West Bristol Art Trail opens, with a huge variety of artwork being shown in artists’ homes, studios and other venues throughout the beautiful West Bristol areas of Clifton and Hotwells. Over 100 artists have signed up to exhibit in this first year, with work including painting, prints, ceramics, textiles, childrens’ books, jewellery, and sculpture. Venues around Clifton, Hotwells, Cliftonwood and Spike Island include artists’ homes and studios, The Clifton Club, Hope Community Church, Christchurch, The Create Centre, The Bristol China Factory and Spike Island Print Studios.

The Hotwells and Cliftonwood Community Association have provided the initial co-ordination, resources and administrative support needed to facilitate the first year of the West Bristol Art Trail, but many of the exhibiting artists have since shared their skills and time to help make this trail a success. Some sponsorship has been generously provided by CHIS and the Hotwells Panto.

Bristol already hosts a number of Arts Trails and Open Sudios throughout the year, but it was felt that, with many artists living in the Clifton and Hotwells area, a new Trail was needed to bring together these artists with the local community. This Trail will give the public a chance to see the amazing variety and quality of work being produced by local artists, as well as to meet and speak with the artists themselves – to learn more about their media, methods of working, and possibly to commission new work. It is also a fantastic opportunity to buy original work that cannot be found on the high street. In addition, there will be a display of ‘Hair Art’ at Sui Generis, where visitors could themselves become a walking work of art, poetry readings, performance art and films.
